HDPE packaging
Plastic plays a key role in the modern packaging industry. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) in particular has established itself as a useful and effective material. Its specific properties make it ideal for a wide range of applications in food packaging.

What is HDPE plastic?
HDPE is a thermoplastic material characterised by its high density and strength. The plastic is produced, amongst other things, through the polymerisation of polyethylene monomers such as ethylene. During this process, known as chain polymerisation, the molecules are linked together to form long chains. This results in a linear molecular structure with few branches, which is responsible for the key characteristics of this type of plastic.
Why is HDPE particularly suitable for packaging?
Due to this structure, HDPE is a plastic that is particularly rigid, has high chemical resistance and is also water-repellent and resistant to moisture and temperature fluctuations. Despite all these robust properties, it nevertheless has a lightweight structure. HDPE is also reusable and can be recycled. Thanks to its robustness, recyclability and versatility, HDPE is a cost-effective, long-lasting option for a variety of packaging solutions. As it can be reused, this plastic is also well-suited to helping the packaging industry move a step closer to its sustainability goals.
What makes HDPE suitable for use in the food industry?
The food industry places high demands on packaging materials. HDPE is well-suited to food packaging thanks to its hygienic properties and stability. High-quality HDPE is food-safe and provides good protection for food: It protects the contents from external influences and ensures a longer shelf life – without affecting the taste or posing any health risks. Thanks to its characteristics, HDPE is particularly suitable for the storage and transport of food and is often an indispensable material in this sector.
HDPE vs. LDPE: Differences and Applications
It is not only HDPE that is considered a popular plastic for packaging. LDPE (low-density polyethylene) is also widely used. Despite some similarities, the plastics differ in certain properties and areas of application:
Density & strength: HDPE has a higher density and is stiffer and more robust. LDPE, on the other hand, is softer, more flexible and more stretchable.
Appearance: LDPE is usually clear and transparent, whilst uncoloured HDPE is milky and transparent. LDPE is therefore well suited, for example in the form of cling film, for applications where the contents need to be visible. HDPE packaging, on the other hand, offers better protection against UV radiation and light damage due to its optical properties. It is also very frequently produced in a variety of colours – including to facilitate the separation of product groups and hygiene zones in the food industry.
Temperature resistance: HDPE is more thermally stable than LDPE. It withstands higher temperatures better without losing its shape or strength. Although LDPE is significantly more sensitive to high temperatures and less dimensionally stable, it performs particularly well at low temperatures thanks to its flexibility.
Food safety: Both types of plastic are of a correspondingly high quality and have been tested to ensure they are safe for food contact. They are odourless and tasteless and have good chemical stability.
Use in the food industry:
HDPE It is frequently used for sturdy and rigid packaging such as large containers, vats and barrels, or robust transport crates. However, it also serves an important purpose in the form of safety helmets, labels or ice packs.
LDPE is particularly common with flexible packaging materials such as gusseted bags, , protective covers or as a coating for Uses. As it provides a good moisture barrier, it keeps food fresh.
Overall, both materials have their own specific strengths, and it is hardly surprising that they are used in many different areas of packaging within the food production industry.
Essential HDPE packaging for food producers
For food producers, particularly in the industrial sector, certain types of HDPE packaging are particularly useful. These include, for example:
HDPE crates and pallets enable food to be stored hygienically and transported safely.
HDPE drums and barrels are ideal for storing solid and liquid foodstuffs.
HDPE bottles and canisters are ideal for liquids such as milk, juices or oils.
HDPE trays and containers are perfect for portioning and presenting fresh produce.
